MYTH, MATERIALITY + MYSTIC TRUTHS

Pochote is a fluffy, silk-cotton-like fiber that is derived from the large seed pods of the ceiba tree, which is native to Mexico, South, and Central America. In pre-conquest cultures, the ceiba tree was revered as ‘axis mundi’ — the sacred world tree connecting underworld with sky. The conical thorns clustered along the young ceiba’s trunk were frequently reproduced on burial urns and ritual incense burners.

Today, in the northern mountains of Oaxaca, artisans harvest the floss of this mythical tree, reduce it to a soft pulp, and dye it with flower petals and seed skins to create some of the most extraordinary, one-of-a-kind, high vibrational art papers in the world.
